For many years The Red Door at Skeldale House, (No23 Kirkgate) was well known to clients as the entrance to the Veterinary Practice. Since the mid 1970's the exploits and adventures of those who worked and visited here have become widely known through the books of James Herriot. The Red Door has also become a focus for numerous visitors from all over the world. The famous Red Door is now recognised as being the entrance to The World of James Herriot.

This picture, which was commissioned by The World of James Herriot, is an original watercolour by Richard E Bennett a local artist. We remember the practice looking after our cats as they needed treatment and being given a consultation by 'James Herriot' and a subsequent prescription - the cost was just 37p (less than US 50cents). Worldwide fame did not change a kind man who loved his work.
